Don’t let God get Crowded Out this Spring
Dear Friends,
Mothers’ Day is just a few short days away, and with it our tradition of celebrating all the women of the church with a rose and special prayers of blessing. We’ll do this at both services — and guys, just a reminder that going to church with her may be one of the best gifts you can give this weekend. The weather report says it should be about 97 degrees — not exactly ideal Mothers’ Day weather, so thank goodness we’re not having church outside any more!
This time of year I feel like I can barely keep up with my garden. Ehh, “garden” is too fancy a word — I can’t keep up with the landscaping around my house. The wildly-tall weeds and the shoots of shrubbery and those suckers off the roots of the crepe myrtle trees (the worst!) all seem to grow overnight. I just keep getting behind.
And for many of us, this time of year our broader life feels like that too. In the post-Easter, pre-summer rush of May it’s easy to feel like crying out “Mayday! Mayday!” It’s easy to blink and feel behind.
Hang in there! It’s actually not accidental that this busy time in the world around us coincides with the church’s long, fifty-day celebration of Easter. Christ’s resurrection not only promises us eternal life, but empowers our present life with meaning, purpose, and hope. The kingdom of God can break into the rush of graduations, proms, trips, and doctor’s appointments.
That’s what we come to worship to celebrate each week. Don’t let God get crowded out in this season; let God enrich and inspire all there is to do.
In Christ,
Fr. Andrew
