Our History
St. Andrew’s was founded in 2005 by The Rev. Mike Michie and a group of lay people invested in the hope of a new Episcopal church in the growing suburb of McKinney, Texas. The official launch took place in the aerobics room of the McKinney YMCA, before moving to an elementary school, then back to the Y, before finally stepping forward in faith and raising the money to build our first building. The church moved to its present location on McKinney Ranch Pkwy in 2012.
In 2017, Fr. Mike and his family left St. Andrew’s to help foster church planting ministries in the broader Episcopal Church. The Rev. Andrew Van Kirk, who had been the Associate Rector at St. Andrew’s since 2013, was appointed Priest-in-Charge, and 18 months later, in February of 2019, was appointed the second Rector of St. Andrew’s. We completed our first building expansion in the summer of 2019, adding much needed space for youth, children, and adults to learn, sing, and serve.
In 2020 our Priest Associate, Mother Paulette Magnuson, moved right across the street from St. Andrew’s to Hidden Springs Senior Living Community, and (in the middle of the pandemic) quickly began a ministry there. At the beginning of 2021, we added Fr. Logan Hurst to our staff.
Chiefly, however, our story is not one of priests and leaders, but a story of the people of God seeking to love one another and those in need in our community. St. Andrew’s members have founded Hugs Cafe and Greenhouse, the McKinney Little Free Pantry, the Believe! Race. These are not church ministries, they are the ministries of the people who call St. Andrew’s their church. Our work of putting flesh and bone on the love of Jesus is the work of our lives, not of our parish programs.
