Bishop's 'Offense of the Gospel' Class

Dear Friends,

“Offense” and “Gospel” are not words that would seem to belong together, at least in the minds of us who stand in the rich inheritance of Christendom. But stop for a second, remember that Son of God who brought the gospel was cruelly murdered, and then it becomes obvious that something about the gospel must have been offensive – highly offensive.

“The Gracious Offense of the Gospel” is the name of the class that The Rt. Rev. George Sumner, the Seventh Bishop of Dallas, will be teaching at St. Andrew’s on Wednesday nights in September and October. He means to get at how the gospel and its radical message of God's grace can be offensive to our human sensibilities and prejudices. At the same time, that gracious offense is also at the heart of the good news.

Bishop Sumner has a PhD in Theology from Yale, and is a gifted scholar and writer. This course will bring those great gifts right into Michie Hall. It’s also a sign of the esteem with which he holds our parish that he’s teaching here.

I know Wednesday nights don’t work for everyone, but I do hope that many of you will take advantage of this opportunity to hear from our Bishop and learn more about the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Dates: September 6, 13; October 4, 11
Time: From 7-8 pm
Nursery: Nursery care available on request, email Fr. Logan Hurst.

In Christ,
Fr. Andrew
