Wait for Christ. Grow in Love.
Preacher: The Rev. Andrew Van Kirk
Scripture: Luke 3:7-18
Advent is a season of waiting—not passively, but actively, as we prepare for the coming of Christ. In Luke 21, Jesus speaks of cosmic signs and personal readiness, reminding us that God is both transcendent, ruling over the entire universe, and imminent, deeply personal and present with each of us. This paradox calls us to live with awe and attentiveness.
The imagery of the tree in Jesus’ parable is a powerful bridge between God’s transcendence and imminence. The tree is shaped by forces beyond its control—the sun, the seasons—and yet it must respond by sprouting new leaves. Likewise, while we cannot control the cosmic events of Christ’s return, we are called to respond faithfully in our daily lives, growing in love and readiness.
In times of hardship or uncertainty, Jesus invites us to resist fear and despair. Instead, like trees in summer, we are called to burst forth with new life, trusting in God’s power and embracing opportunities to love and serve. Advent is not a season of dormancy but of growth—spiritual preparation for the day when we stand before the God of the universe, clothed in the fruit of love.
Let this season inspire you to live in both reverence for God’s grandeur and intimacy with his presence, sprouting new life even when times are hard.
