The Indulgence of Christmas
Preacher: The Rev. Andrew Van Kirk
Scripture: Luke 2:1-20
Christmas invites us to indulge—not in fleeting pleasures or worldly riches, but in the boundless goodness of God. The story of Christ’s birth reveals a God who lavishes us with good news, glory, and love.
The first Christmas might seem humble on the surface—a manger, a young couple, and a newborn baby. Yet, in God’s eyes, it was an evening of divine indulgence. The angels heralded good news of great joy, a Savior born to bring hope to a weary world. The heavens burst into song, glorifying God, and even the shepherds, with their simple faith, joined in the chorus of praise. At the center of it all lay a love so profound that God himself came to dwell among us, fully human and fully divine, so that we might become children of God.
Today, the invitation is to indulge as God does—not in material excess, but in the richness of his gifts. Feast on the good news that Christ came for you, to bring light into the darkness of your life. Bask in the glory of God’s presence, allowing it to fill your heart with awe and joy. And let yourself be overcome by love: the love of family, friends, and most of all, the perfect love of God revealed in Jesus.
This Christmas, embrace the indulgence of God. Celebrate the good news, glory, and love that surround you, and share these gifts with others. Let your life reflect the beauty of this holy season, shining with the light of Christ.
