Sing of Mary, Pure and Lowly

Lyrics by Roland F Palmer

Mary is a mother to all of us, in a way, a source of comfort and wisdom that not everyone gets from their own mothers. It is no wonder that she so often draws us into prayer because we need a mother sometimes to whom we can unburden our hearts.

Imagine Mary “in the home at Nazareth” raising her small and admittedly strange son Jesus and following him all the way “till on Calvary he died”. Her every footstep is filled with “love enduring unto death”.

It is hard to imagine her experience of raising her son from his miraculous birth only to find herself decades later at the foot of the cross as his life ebbed away. Still harder is it for those of us who know how the story ends to think of her spending that dark Passover believing her son to be lost forever. It makes you want to ask “Mary, did you know?”

What Mary knew doesn’t matter. What matters is that “God’s own Son…became her little child” and she became his mother and, at his death, as she became mother to the beloved disciple, so too all of us in Christ have a mother in her.
