Failure as a Fever

  • Preacher: Tim Jenkins

  • Series: Jonah and a Bad Case of Mercy Sickness

  • Passage: Jonah 2

Jonah found himself in the belly of a great fish—not just as punishment, but as a place of transformation. His resistance to God’s call had led him to rock bottom, and yet, even there, God was at work. The time in the fish was not just about survival; it was about spiritual healing.

Like a fever that burns away illness, God sometimes uses hardships to reveal what needs to be healed in us. Jonah’s resistance to God’s mercy for others was a sickness of the heart. He wanted justice, not grace. But in the belly of the fish, he had no choice but to reflect, repent, and surrender.

We, too, face moments when life feels overwhelming, when we resist what God is doing, or when we struggle with our own brokenness. In those times, we can remember that God does not leave us to drown. Instead, he meets us in our distress, reshaping our hearts and calling us back to himself.

Jonah’s journey wasn’t over—he still had lessons to learn. But in his lowest moment, he discovered a crucial truth: Salvation belongs to the Lord. No matter how far we run, God is still there, ready to redeem, restore, and heal.
